How to build your own private-label t-shirt brand from China
The difference between an anonymous t-shirt and a branded one is not the fabric alone. It is a chain of small elements that must be requested explicitly, because none of them happen by default. This guide covers each one, roughly what it costs, and when it earns its place.
What actually makes a product private label?
Private label means the factory produces to your specification and under your name, not that you buy a finished product and stick a label on it. In practice that covers: fabric and weight selection, adjusting the fit, a neck label with your name, a size and care label, a hang tag, individual packing, and sometimes the thread, buttons and neck tape.
Neck labels
- Woven label: the retail standard and the best looking. It carries its own minimum, usually 500 to 1,000 pieces, and it is made once and stored for later orders.
- Printed satin label: cheaper and faster, but it can fade with repeated washing.
- Direct neck print instead of a label: comfortable against the skin and common in fashion tees, and it removes the label cost entirely.
A care label is a legal requirement in most markets, because it carries the fibre composition, country of origin and care instructions. Check your market's requirements before you design, since some markets mandate a particular language or specific symbols.
Hang tags and packaging
The hang tag is the first thing a shopper sees on the rail, and it costs little relative to its effect. Packaging steps up from a plain poly bag, to a printed bag with your name, to a rigid box. Each step raises the cost and changes how the product reads at the point of sale. A practical note: packaging affects volume, and sea freight is charged by volume rather than weight, so bulky packaging is paid for twice.
Neck tape and interior details
Taping the neck seam in a contrasting colour, or adding an interior print, is a small detail that experienced buyers notice and that lifts the perceived quality. It costs very little when ordered with the main run, and a lot when requested afterwards as a change.
Minimum order quantity for private label
The minimum for the shirt itself is usually 100 to 300 pieces per model and colour. But woven labels carry their own separate minimum, and so do printed bags. It is therefore common on a first order to buy enough labels for the next three orders, which is a sound investment: the unit price falls sharply with quantity and labels do not spoil in storage.
Protecting your design
Put a clause in the contract preventing the factory from selling your design or using photographs of your product in its own marketing. Serious factories accept this routinely, and a refusal is a signal worth pausing on.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a first private-label order take? About two weeks longer than a plain order, because labels and packaging are produced in parallel and need their own sample approval.
Do I need a registered trademark? Not to manufacture the product, but you do need one to protect your name in your own market, and for some selling platforms.
Can I start small? Yes, by starting with one colour, one model and a printed label instead of a woven one, then upgrading on the second order.
